Who and What we are

  • Our logo represents a stemple, a sike and a  mine entrance and exit.
  • A stemple is a wooden bar. Lead miners jammed stemples into the rock face inside their mines and used them as ladders for climbing.
  • A sike is a dialect word for a small stream. It's heard in parts of Northern England and parts of Scotland. Lead mining depended on the availability of water .

Review of Lead Mining Land

"This is a book that has been written with love; for the landscape, the industry, the miner's life and the poetry that weaves a net to capture all. Once you have read to the end, you will be inspired to visit, or re-visit, the valleys and towns of Lead Mining Land."

Extract from the Review by author and geologist Geoff Downer. The full Review appears in Newsletters of the SE branch of the Open University Geology Association and the Kent branch of the Geologists' Association.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact us at stemplesike@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes. If it's not in stock, high street sellers can order the book through all the usual  channels  including  Gardners, or via the distributor, whose online shop is YorkBookShop.com  (Tel 01904 431213).  The ISBN is 978-1-3999-5276-7. Some Tourist Information Centres , for example, Hudson House in Reeth, carry the book.

The book is listed on all the usual online bookshelves. See, for example, www.geosupplies.co.uk  and The Guardian Bookshop. UK and EU residents can also order through YorkBookShop.com, our distributor. Amazon and Blackwells, for example, offer copies to readers further afield.

We've taken great care over the formatting of the book. Pages have different layouts to maximise the look and accessibility of the text and images. The pages themselves are broad and  have a drape. We feel it is a book to hold in the hand rather than a book to read on a screen.
